Sites of National Significance

  • Landmark 置地廣塲 – The location where Dr. Rizal first disembarked in Hong Kong in February 1888, marking the beginning of an intellectually enriching journey that broadened his understanding of Asian cultures.

  • Duddell Street Steps and Gas Lamps – A preserved colonial-era site, frequented by Dr. Rizal, which remains one of Hong Kong’s most atmospheric public spaces and a symbolic retreat during his stay.

  • No. 5 D’Aguilar Street – The site of Dr. Rizal’s ophthalmology clinic, established in 1891 during his self-imposed exile. Here, Rizal practiced medicine and provided care to patients regardless of background, exemplifying his quiet resistance through service.

  • No. 2 Rednaxela Terrace – Dr. Rizal’s place of residence in Hong Kong, where he lived with his family and continued his reformist writing and advocacy for Philippine autonomy.

  • Hong Kong Cemetery – The final resting place of Josephine Bracken, Rizal’s partner, whose personal sacrifices formed an intimate yet vital dimension of the Rizalian legacy.

Dr. Rizal’s sojourn in Hong Kong—first in 1888 and again from 1891 to 1892—was a defining period of reflection, strategic planning, and cultural observation. His experiences in the city deeply informed his philosophies and efforts toward peaceful reform and national awakening.

Commemorating Heritage and Exemplifying Leadership:

A Formal Visit to Dr. Jose Rizal’s Historical Sites in Hong Kong by CEO Sir Yongsoo “Samuel” Cho

Hong Kong – July 2025 – In a distinguished act of cultural diplomacy and historical reflection, Sir Yongsoo “Samuel” Cho, Chief Executive Officer of IEK HQ Philippines Holdings Inc. and Seoul Chapter Commander of the Knights of Rizal, led a formal visit to key historical landmarks associated with the life and legacy of Dr. Jose Rizal in Hong Kong. He was joined by Sir Gul Mohammad, KCR, Commander of the Knights of Rizal, in this meaningful engagement, which underscored the enduring relevance of Dr. Rizal’s ideals in shaping contemporary leadership and national identity.

The itinerary of the visit was carefully selected to reflect the pivotal chapters of Dr. Rizal’s life during his time in Hong Kong, and to pay solemn tribute to his contributions to Filipino nationalism, intellectual reform, and humanitarian ideals.

Elevating Heritage Through Corporate and Civic Leadership
